New Year’s Resolution—What Can We Learn From Tom Brady?

Most of us look forward to making a New Year’s resolution at the end of each year. It feels good to proclaim our plans of conquering our most important goals—again or for the first time. But is there more to this annual ritual than the playful chattering we make hours before the new year?

There’s something to be said about cycles: starts, stops and restarts. They’re actually what we need to relight our flame of hope and keep us going, cycle after cycle.

We depend on cycles every day, every week and month. If something important doesn’t get done today, we say “I’ll do it tomorrow”. If we don’t meet our financial quota one month, we say we will the next. Of course, the big one is each year with the New Year’s resolution.

The beauty of the New Year’s resolution is its “do over” factor.

There’s something almost cleansing about cycles. We’re able to put any failures, and more importantly reset our goals, plans and strategies even better than before. We’re able to, but it doesn’t mean we actually do improve them. At least we have the opportunity to.

Hopefully, we’re all keeping track of our productivity and accomplishments—on at least a weekly basis—by keeping track with statistics. Whether we all are or not, most of us certainly reflect and take inventory at the end of each year. We make a commitment to make some big things happen next year.

The takeaway from this article is, take advantage of the power that cycles offer. They’re the hidden “do over” we have in life and business. Do these 4 things:

1. Leave the past behind, even if favorable. This will keep you from resting on your laurels.

2. Remain in the present with your productivity and creativity of the future.

3. Each day, week, month…keep bellowing the embers of hope.

4. Take note of where you are and how you’re going to get to where you want to be.

These simple actions can change the trajectory of your business and your life.

Just like when quarterback, Tom Brady, throws an interception, I don’t know for sure, but my observation is that he starts over, like it never happened, reignites his dream, and calls another play.

Arguably, Tom Brady is the greatest quarterback that has ever played the game of American football. Imagine what the above 4 actions can do you.

Happy New Year!
